Walking Wild Africa

Kichaka Expeditions offers a very different kind of safari experience in Tanzania. Rather than focusing purely on vehicle game drives and lodge life, Kichaka is designed for travellers who want to actively explore, spend time on foot, and gain a deeper understanding of the landscapes and wildlife they are visiting.

Operating in the remote southern reaches of Ruaha National Park, one of East Africa’s largest and least visited parks, Kichaka combines exceptional guiding, low-impact camps and flexible itineraries that prioritise immersion over itinerary-ticking.

Walking Safaris at the Core of the Experience

Walking safaris are central to Kichaka’s approach. Time on foot allows guests to slow down and engage with the bush in a way that simply isn’t possible from a vehicle. Walks focus on tracking, animal behaviour, plant life, bird calls and the subtle signs that reveal how the ecosystem functions as a whole.

Guiding is led by founder and head guide Andrew Molinaro (known as Moli) and a highly experienced team, many of whom are regarded as among the best walking guides in Africa. This depth of expertise is often highlighted in independent reviews, with guests frequently commenting that they leave with a far greater understanding of wildlife and wilderness than on a traditional safari.

Walking is always balanced with safety, flexibility and comfort, and activities are adapted to guests’ interests and abilities.

Camps and Safari Styles

Kichaka Expeditions offers several different ways to experience Ruaha, depending on how remote or comfortable you want your safari to be:

Kichaka Zumbua (Main Camp)
This is the most comfortable option and works well for first-time visitors to Ruaha or those wanting a blend of walking, game drives and downtime. Spacious raised tents offer excellent views over the surrounding landscape, private bathrooms and plunge pools. It’s a good base for exploring different habitats within the park.

Kichaka Kidogo (Fly Camp)
A simpler, more immersive camp located closer to the river. Accommodation is open and unfussy, with bucket showers and meals cooked over the fire. Ideal for travellers who want to feel closer to nature without fully giving up comfort.

Kichaka Wild (Expedition Safari)
A multi-night mobile expedition that moves through remote areas of Ruaha. This is a true exploration-style safari, combining walking, driving and fly camping in areas rarely visited by other guests. Best suited to confident travellers who want a strong sense of adventure and exclusivity.

What Activities Are on Offer?

While walking is a major focus, Kichaka safaris are varied and well-rounded:

  • Game drives in open vehicles, covering larger distances and offering excellent wildlife viewing
  • Birding, with Ruaha home to nearly 600 recorded species
  • Fly camping, sleeping out in carefully chosen wilderness locations
  • Bush meals and sundowners, often in completely secluded spots
  • Stargazing, with minimal light pollution and exceptionally clear night skies
  • Photography support, with guides happy to help guests improve wildlife and landscape shots

The flexibility of the operation means days are shaped around wildlife movements, weather conditions and guest interests, rather than fixed schedules.

Wildlife and Landscape

Ruaha is known for its dramatic scenery, with baobab-studded plains, rocky escarpments and seasonal rivers. Wildlife highlights include large elephant herds, lion, leopard, buffalo, wild dog, giraffe and excellent birdlife. Importantly, visitor numbers are low compared to northern parks like the Serengeti, making sightings feel far more personal and unpressured.

Best Time to Visit Kichaka Expeditions

The best time to visit Kichaka and Ruaha National Park depends on what you want from your safari:

Dry Season: June to October (Best Overall)

  • Excellent wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around rivers and water sources
  • Cooler temperatures, especially on morning walks
  • Ideal conditions for walking safaris and fly camping
  • Peak months are July–September

Green Season: November to March

  • Lush landscapes and dramatic skies
  • Excellent birding, with migratory species present
  • Fewer visitors and a quieter feel
  • Wildlife still present, though more dispersed

April to May

  • Heavier rains; some camps close during this period
  • Best avoided unless specifically seeking very low-season travel

For most travellers, July to October offers the best balance of wildlife, weather and accessibility.
