Visit Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, Africa’s first community-run orphanage, where rescued calves are lovingly rehabilitated.

Our final stop is to Ithumba Hills Camp, a remote Sheldrick Wildlife Trust outpost, where you can witness older orphans returning to the wild—watching their milk feeds, mud baths, and interactions with wild herds.

Elephant Watch Camp

Elephant Watch Camp is a conservation-focused eco-camp in Samburu, closely linked to Save the Elephants, offering expert-led experiences and in-depth insight into elephant behaviour and research.

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is a pioneering community-owned facility in northern Kenya, where rescued elephant calves are cared for and rehabilitated by local keepers before being returned to the wild.

Ithumba Camp

Ithumba Camp is a remote Sheldrick Wildlife Trust outpost in Tsavo East, offering a rare opportunity to observe older elephant orphans as they transition back into the wild.

Day to Day Itinerary

DAY 1: ARRIVAL INTO NAIROBI 

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you’ll be warmly welcomed by your host and a  representative from Cheli & Peacock.

With VIP meet-and-greet service, you’ll be assisted through immigration and customs. 

Tonight, you’ll stay at Tamarind Tree Hotel, a comfortable and stylish base conveniently located between Nairobi National Park and Wilson Airport. Settle in, relax by the pool, or enjoy a drink at the bar before dinner. This evening is yours to rest and recover from your journey, ready to begin your conservation safari in the morning.

DAY 2 & 3: ELEPHANT WATCH CAMP 

Spend the next two days immersed in the world of Samburu’s elephants. The camp’s guides, trained by the renowned Save the Elephants team, offer unrivalled insight into the complex social structures, behaviours, and challenges these animals face.

Each day includes:

  • Game drives focused on locating individual elephants being monitored by researchers

  • Possible visit to the Save the Elephants research centre

  • Bush breakfasts or lunches in scenic spots

  • Cultural interactions with the Samburu community

This is your chance to observe elephants through a conservationist’s lens—deepening your understanding of their family dynamics, emotional lives, and the threats to their survival.

DAY 3: VISITING RETETI & ONWARD TO ITHUMBA 

This morning, take to the skies again on your private charter flight to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, Africa’s first community-owned and operated elephant orphanage.

You’ll enjoy a private visit with the sanctuary team, learning about their rescue work, daily routines, and how calves are rehabilitated for a return to the wild. 

After lunch, you’ll fly on to Tsavo East National Park, where your driver will transfer you by 4×4 to Ithumba Camp, your base for the next three nights. Nestled deep in the wild north of Tsavo, the camp is operated by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and provides unique access to their rewilding programme.

DAY 5 & 6 : ITHUMBA CAMP 

Over the next two days, you’ll experience the final stages of elephant rehabilitation. The orphans here are older and more independent, some already mingling with wild herds.

Enjoy close (but ethical) encounters during:

 

  • Morning milk feed and mud bath sessions

  • Optional afternoon visits to the stockades

  • Guided walks or game drives exploring Tsavo East’s vast landscapes

  • Potential sightings of wild elephants returning to greet their adopted kin

 

This is one of the most authentic ways to witness elephants in their natural environment, without crowds, in a truly wild setting.

DAY 7: RETURN TO NAIROBI & HOME 

After a final breakfast in camp and farewells to the elephants, you’ll transfer by road to the local airstrip for your scenic flight back to Nairobi. Upon arrival, you’ll be met and assisted by the Cheli & Peacock team before continuing with your onward travel or international departure.
