Your safari starts at your first mobile tented camp, where you’re warmly welcomed by your guide, a team of Laikipia Maasai and Samburu staff, and the camel caravan. Set among the ancient rocks of Nayasura – a place used as a campsite for millennia – you’ll enjoy a fresh lunch and rest in your spacious canvas tent.
As the afternoon cools, you’ll set out on your first walk, tracking game and soaking in the landscape, before arriving at the crest of Nayasura for sundowners and sweeping views of the plains below.
After hot showers and fireside drinks, the day ends with a candlelit dinner under a sky full of stars.
After breakfast at Nayasura, we’ll set off on foot toward Nyarara Camp, named after the cheetah often spotted in the area.
Our route takes us across sweeping plains and mixed bush, where we’ll look out for herds of Common and Grevy’s zebra, oryx, Giant gazelle, and – if we’re lucky – elusive species like dik-dik, gerenuk, and lesser kudu.
Meanwhile, our pack of camels will take a more direct route, arriving ahead of us to set up camp. We’ll reach Nyarara in time for lunch and cold drink, followed by some rest and a scenic walk to a beautiful sundowner spot.
Today we will be heading down toward the Ewaso Nyiro River, which runs along the eastern edge of the Laikipia Plateau and then turns eastward toward Samburu National Reserve.
Along the way we will be looking for eland, steinbuck and giraffe and enjoy the changing scenery.
When we arrive at the river we may want to take a quick swim before lunch.
After lunch we can visit a local manyatta and watch the livestock coming in for the night or head to a pretty rock for a sundowner.
Walk to Tumaren Camp for a night in huge tents looking out over an open plain with a salt lick on it.
Enjoy an afternoon game drive or relax in the 20 metre swimming pool looking out over the waterhole.
Today we will take a private plane on a scenic flight via the incredible Elephant Reteti Elephant Orphanage.
Enjoy a rare, behind-the-scenes look at Kenya’s first community-owned elephant orphanage, where rescue calves are cared for with the goal of returning them to the wild. An inspiring experience that highlights the power of community-led conservation.
We will continue our flight to Shompole Wilderness and enjoy a sumptious dinner with our hosts, the Du Toit family.
It’s time to relax and enjoy nature at the beautiful Shompole Wilderness.
